Captain Francisco de Orellana started the Amazon expedition on December 26, 1541, undertaking the first navigation of the world’s longest and mightiest river. He took fifty- seven men on board the fragile ship San Pedro, to sail the tumultuous Coca River. As the boat was not adequate, the company decided on the construction of a greater brig, the Victoria.
